Ad Hoc Committee to Review the "Many Voices of Diversity Report'
With Regards to Sexual Orientation Issues: History/Chronology

Following the approval of the LAUC Cultural Diversity Committee's "Many Voices of Diversity" Report and its recommendations at the May 1992 Spring Assembly, several members of the Committee felt that there was not adequate gay and lesbian representation on the committee and requested that LAUC President Gary Peete establish an ad hoc committee whose members would be more familiar with many of the pertinent issues addressed in the Report. President Peete responded by establishing the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the "Many Voices Report," which received its charge on April 2, 1996. In essence the new committee was asked to review the "Many Voices" report and either create a new, separate report that would address more fully the issues of sexual diversity within the University, or, if it were deemed more appropriate, to suggest wording changes within the report which would more adequately address these concerns.

On May 3, 1996, at the urging of its Chair, Locke Morrisey, the committee's name was modified to become the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the "Many Voices of Diversity." with Regards to Sexual Orientation Issues, to more accurately reflect the committee's charge and the proposed wording changes being considered in the University's anti-discrimination policy dealing, in part, with gender and sexual-orientation prohibitions.

While acknowledging the diligent efforts and hard work that went into the creation of the "Many Voices" report, the members of the ad hoc committee concluded that a mere rewrite of the report would be neither appropriate nor adequate and decided to create a new report that could function as an "addendum", paralleling the format of the "Many Voices Report."

The Ad Hoc Committee completed its charge on July 1, 1996 and submitted its report directly to President Peete, who subsequently discharged the committee. After intensive review and discussion of the new report at the 1996 Fall Assembly, it was referred to the LAUC Cultural Diversity Committee for further review and consideration. This committee reported back that it did not feel comfortable in either revising or rewriting the work of the ad hoc committee, after which its report was referred back to the President and the Executive Board, who received it and took no further action. Since then none of the extensive ad hoc committee recommendations have been acted upon and the status of its report remained unresolved since its completion in 1996.

In his 1996-97 Annual Report to LAUC President Miki Goral, dated April 27,1997, Locke Morrisey, Chair of both the Cultural Diversity Committee and the late Ad Hoc Committee strongly suggested that the several recommendations of the ad hoc committee be supported 'in concept" and that the following year's (1997-1998) Cultural Diversity Committee revisit his committee's detailed recommendations and direct them to the most appropriate group for further consideration and, hopefully, for meaningful action.

The 1997-1998 Committee was so charged by LAUC President, Lucia Snowhill, and its Chair, Esteban Valdez proceeded to solicit further comments from the LAUC membership, at large. The general response to Valdez' additional effort was that numerous issues still remained to be addressed and extensive further consideration would be necessary before any real progress could be expected.

At the meeting of the LAUC Executive Board on October 23, 1998, the history and status of the Ad Hoc Committee's report was thoroughly reviewed and discussed at length. Subsequently with the Board's concurrence, LAUC President, Kari Lucas moved to file the Ad Hoc Report with the understanding that such an official action, while not binding on either the President, the Executive Board or the LAUC membership, would, in effect, make it available both for information purposes and for future consideration at any time.

On September 16, 1998 the 1998-1999 Cultural Diversity Committee. chaired by Gabriella Gray, was asked specifically, as part of its overall charge, to continue the ongoing consideration and discussion of the marry aspects of diversity raised previously by both the "Many Voices of Diversity" and "Sexual Orientation" reports.

The 1998-1999 Cultural Diversity Committee met on December 18, 1998 at the University Office of the President in Oakland, to pursue an examination of the current state of the numerous and varied aspects of cultural diversity on the several campuses of the University of California. One of the outcomes of this meeting was the decision to create a Cultural Diversity Website, with links to pertinent diversity documents, including "Many Voices of Diversity Report," the subsequent Sexual Orientation Issues Document and their historical chronological relationship.
