LAUC Diversity Committee
Annual Report 2002
The LAUC Diversity Committee met once, on April 15, 2002 at UCOP. Resulting from that meeting, Jerry Thompson (UCD) and Judy Consales (UCLA) agreed to serve as Co-Chairs of the LAUC Diversity Committee over the next year. Their term of appointment is September 1, 2002 through August 31, 2003.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- The LAUC Diversity web page has been revised considerably (thanks to the diligent work of Lai-Ying Hsiung) and now incorporates a number of important documents and some new features.
- Website features
- A searchable database of resources on diversity available on different UC campuses. Users can search by title words and are able to limit searches by campus or subject (e.g., Native American, African American, Asian, Gender/Women). The database supports Boolean logic and items can be sorted.
- Charges/Rosters, Interim Reports and Annual Reports from 1992-present.
- Special Reports and documents from 1991-present.
- Links to articles about the committee.
- Local campus diversity activities from 2000-present.
- University of California workforce statistics
- University of California Affirmative Action Guidelines for Recruitment and Retention of Faculty
- ARL Diversity Program
- The committee reviewed the 2001/2002 Diversity Committee Annual report to determine completed sections of the 5-year plan. Most of the tasks listed in the plan were completed, in large part because of the development of the new web page.
- The committee discussed in detail the potential for a 25% FTE Diversity Coordinator, one of the pending actions from the 5-year plan. With current State budget cuts imminent for FY 2002/2003, there was concern that it would be difficult to obtain funding for a new position. Reporting structure was also a concern. Salvador Guerena (UCSB) and John Berry (UCB) will work together to draft a proposal to link this position with either UCSB’s or UCB’s diversity fellowship program.
- Diversity members will report back to the Committee Co-Chair on the following (these will be on-going activities for the committee):
- Review own campus bibliographic pathfinder entries on diversity and submit changes to ejournals@library.ucsc.edu so that they can be added to the “Resources on Diversity” database
- Review own campus project/program entries on diversity and submit changes to ejournals@library.ucsc.edu so that they can be added to the “Resources on Diversity” database
- Submit 2001/2002 list of local activities by August 2002 to be included in the Committee’s next Annual Report and also for linking on the revised committee web page
- Submit any campus website URL updates
- Information submitted will be updated on the LAUC Diversity web pages
FUTURE TASKS FOR THE COMMITTEE
The committee identified a number of goals to work on for the upcoming year.
- Ongoing: reports from individual campuses on their diversity activities, updated URLs, pathfinders and resources
- Ongoing: website maintenance
- A LAUC Diversity LISTSERV: John Berry (UCB) volunteered to run the LISTSERV. It would be open to library employees from any campus. He will check to see if it can be run from a UCB server and will report back to the committee
- Recruitment and Retention: an area of the Diversity website will focus on recruitment and retention. The faculty document has already been added to the website, but additional documents have also been identified that can be added to this area:
- The past draft on Best Practices will be reviewed for completion before adding to the website
- The UCSB “Advancing Human Diversity” document
Respectfully submitted,
Peggy Tahir and Lai-Ying Hsiung, Co-Chairs
