UCSF

Academic Life

The San Francisco campus is a nationally recognized leader in biomedical research and health sciences education. UCSF offers graduate academic degrees (primarily the Ph.D.) in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, and professional degrees in dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. Some UCSF students enroll in joint programs to obtain both a Ph.D. and a professional degree. UCSF also trains postdoctoral scholars, medical residents, interns, and other health professionals.

UCSF graduate students conduct research in basic, clinical, social, or policy sciences. Ultimately this work will increase scientific understanding, benefit human health, shape health care systems, and influence public policy and public health education. The talented UCSF faculty includes three Nobel laureates, 34 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and 69 members of the Institute of Medicine. UCSF faculty members have contributed to many important discoveries and inventions in the health sciences. Seventy biotechnology companies can trace their origins to UCSF inventions, technology, or personnel.

UCSF graduate programs offer students from all backgrounds a friendly environment and intellectual challenge while preparing them to become leaders among health sciences researchers and professionals.
