Academic Life

Home to over 40 graduate departments, UCSD offers degrees in fields from bioengineering to ethnic studies, physics to political science, biochemistry to literature, neuroscience to visual arts, and beyond. As a premier institution for doctoral work, UCSD's facilities, funding, and educational opportunities parallel the best institutions in the world.

Among the faculty are Nobel laureates, a Fields Medalist in mathematics, recipients of the National Medal of Sciences, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and many Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellows. On the cutting edge of research, the UCSD faculty participate in numerous research groups and institutes on campus. Members of organized research units, often spanning several academic departments, carry out advanced research projects and provide outstanding opportunities for graduate students. UCSD is affiliated with over 40 research centers, institutes, projects and natural reserves. Such resources include: San Diego Supercomputer Center (one of two in the country), California Space Institute, AIDS Research Institute, Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition, Center for Research in Computing and the Arts, Center for Magnetic Recording Research, Center for US-Mexican Studies, and the Scripps Coastal Reserve.

Campus Life

UCSD’s serene setting, amidst eucalyptus groves and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, strikes a perfect balance with its academic atmosphere. Located in La Jolla, just 12 miles from downtown San Diego, UCSD offers top-notch facilities, multitudes of campus events, and recreation options. UCSD provides housing for approximately one third of the graduate students and their families on or near campus. The Early Childhood Education Center provides day care, after school care, and kindergarten classes for children of students, faculty, and staff.
