UC Santa Barbara

Academic Life

UCSB’s graduate programs are distinct and interdisciplinary. Cutting edge departments offering Master’s and Ph.D. degrees include film and media studies, biomolecular science and engineering, media arts and technology, global and international studies, environmental sciences and management, and the nation’s first doctoral program in Chicano/a studies. All are recent additions to traditional disciplinary degrees in the humanities and fine arts, social sciences, engineering, education, math, life and physical sciences.

UCSB offers research experience and undergraduate teaching as part of its graduate programs. The moderate size of the campus allows students to work directly with faculty. Research units and specialized centers encourage collaborations that transcend departmental lines. UCSB is home to 10 national centers and institutes, including seven that are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, and was selected as one of the first California Institutes for Science and Innovation. At Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, the world’s foremost theorists study problems overlapping specialized subfields of the discipline. The UC Linguistic Minority Research Institute based at UCSB explores educational issues affecting minorities and immigrants. The Center for Middle Eastern Studies serves as a national center of instruction and research.

UCSB celebrates the achievement of five recent faculty recipients of Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics, and economics.

UCSB’s graduate programs prepare students to lead in academia, private industry and public service. With its breadth of graduate training, eminent faculty, leadership and world renowned research, this energetic campus ranks among the top institutions of higher education in the United States.
