UCDavis

Academic Life

Distinguished scholars and scientists, a treasured sense of community, and a dedication to the land-grant values of creative, responsive, and innovative teaching, research, and public service form the foundations of UC Davis. The largest of the UC campuses in area and the third largest in overall and graduate enrollment, the campus is nevertheless relaxed and informal. The student body reflects many geographical and cultural backgrounds, and the campus has a strong commitment to diversity. UC Davis is an acknowledged international leader in agricultural, biological, biotechnological, and environmental sciences, and veterinary medicine. It is now being similarly recognized for excellence in the arts, humanities, social sciences, engineering, medicine, health sciences, law, and management.

Unique to UC Davis is the concept of group-based graduate education. Inherently interdisciplinary, graduate groups permit flexibility and fast response to changes within fields, and encourage thinking about research questions that transcend traditional academic department boundaries. Students and faculty may participate across disciplines to reflect the diversity of their intellectual inquiry.

Campus Life

Davis is one of the state’s few college towns. Students comprise a large portion of the city’s population of 60,000, and the campus is a center of activity in the community. The melding of town and gown results in an abundance of bookstores, coffee houses, and restaurants in the tree-and bicycle-filled downtown area. Concerts, films, plays, lectures, exhibits and special events attract students and townspeople alike. Access to the state capital and Bay Area, as well as the Sierra Nevada and Pacific Ocean, provides innumerable cultural and recreational opportunities.
