Considering...

Students

There are many compelling reasons for you to consider graduate school as a next step in your education and career preparation. Some of the most common include:

I am curious…
I want to make a difference…
I find intellectual pursuits rewarding…
Exploring interesting phenomena enlivens me…
A graduate degree will help me meet my career goals…
I thrive among fascinating, intelligent, and witty colleagues…

Considering graduate school requires information regarding the multitude of opportunities and learning environments available to you. Here are a number of ways to learn about the rich possibilities.

Discuss your interests with faculty, graduate students, and advisors.
  • Talk to faculty and graduate students in the field you are considering.

  • Academic advisors on your own campus can be your best resource.
Investigate graduate programs.
  • Write or search the web for graduate programs.
  • Request catalogs and other publications describing graduate programs. These catalogs typically list the academic requirements for admission and explain the admission process.
  • A list of advanced degree programs offered at the University of California begins on page 30 of this publication.
  • Sign up for the GRE Search Service. Many graduate schools and fellowship programs use the GRE Search Service to identify and contact students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. If you sign up for this free service, and match the recruitment profile of a participating institution/ organization, you may be sent information about graduate programs, admissions requirements, financial aid opportunities, fellowships, and other graduate education opportunities.
In order to take advantage of this opportunity, you may wish to sign up with this service early, even before you are ready to the take the GRE. To sign up for the Search Service, go to the GRE website www. gre.org and follow the steps to register for the paper-based exam, or go directly to: https://web1.gre.org:444/gre/gremain_srv.htm Specify whether you want to register for the GRE, for the free Search Service, or both. For more information, call (609) 771-7063 or email gresearch@ets.org.
  • For additional information, contact the graduate division office at your present institution or at any UC campus. Other contacts are listed throughout this publication.

Olusegun (Segun) Williams, Chemistry & Chemical Biology, UC San Francisco

I had been interested in biology from the earliest time I can remember, watching and collecting animals and plants, but it wasn't until I witnessed an acid-base neutralization reaction that I appreciated the wonder of chemistry. I was seven years old. My mother, a high school chemistry teacher, strengthened my chemistry side, while an ambitious science fair project and two biological internships during high school helped me achieve a biology/chemistry balance. Maintaining this balance was a major force in my choosing biochemistry as my major, and it increased my desire to conduct research through college and continue in graduate school.

During my Chemistry & Chemical Biology Program Interview at UCSD I was struck by the diversity of the research being conducted at the chemistry and biology interface. Now that I've been here for six months, I know I made the right decision.
