Description

The Financial Journal Entry System (FJE) provides campuses and the Office of the President with an online method of entering hand-posted transactions to correct data in the Corporate Financial System (CFS). At the end of each post-closing period, corrections are incorporated into the CFS and the financial data warehouse for inclusion in the June final and July 1st post-closing data cycles.

Prior to the development of FJE, hand-posted transactions were collected from campuses in the form of Excel spreadsheets and then generated at UCOP. Within FJE, both campuses and UCOP have access to the online updates, which eliminates UCOP's need to collect hand-posted journals from campuses and so facilitates the fiscal closing process.

FJE also includes a simple inquiry capability that allows users to check specific balances to ensure that hand-posted transactions have achieved the intended results. In addition, while in FJE, users are allowed to make corrections and additions to account and fund attributes included in the Corporate Account/Fund Profile System.

Technical Information

FJE is a Web-based application developed for WebSphere; it runs in a Unix environment with Sybase as the database management system. The reporting is performed using WebFocus, which accesses both the Sybase database containing hand-posted transactions and the Sybase IQ database comprising the financial data warehouse. FJE's inquiry function requests information via a call to WebFocus, with results displaying in a popup browser window (JavaScript must be enabled for this to function properly). FJE will only respond to secure HTTP requests.
