Service Description
Departments and the Technology Service Desk share the responsibilities associated with the support of UC Office of the President (UCOP) local area networks (LAN).
Desktop Computing Local Area Network Services
When a department expresses interest in a local (department-level)
area network, the Technology Service Desk engages department staff
in several consultations to define requirements, clarify needs,
and provide initial time and cost estimates. Based on these consultations,
the department orders all required LAN hardware and software. When
the equipment arrives, the Technology Service Desk provides consultations
and guidance to department LAN administrator staff in the following
LAN start-up and ongoing activities:
The Technology Service Desk also provides assistance and guidance in the following areas:
Department LAN Administration and Maintenance Responsibilities
While the Technology Service Desk provides initial LAN configuration and installation guidance and consultation (as outlined above), ongoing LAN administration and maintenance functions are the responsibility of the department. As a prerequisite to installing a LAN, departments are strongly encouraged to identify a departmental LAN administrator who will assume these responsibilities. However, a department may elect to contract with IR&C or a commercial service for some LAN administration and maintenance services.
In some departments, the role of the LAN administrator may overlap with the role of the departmental PC coordinator. In the same way that the PC coordinator provides a focus to the department's interactions with Desktop Computing Services, the LAN administrator assumes this role in matters that concern the department's LAN.
The department's role in maintaining and administering its LAN includes the following tasks:
If a department elects to formally designate internal staff to be the LAN administrator, the Technology Service Desk further recommends that the LAN administrator obtain the equivalent of introductory training in the basics of LAN support and administration as these apply to Microsoft networking and Windows 2000--the network operating system supported for Office of the President departments.
