Service Description

IR&C assists UCOP departments and the campuses with a range of technology projects, from development of Web-based application systems, to identification of external consultants for needs assessments, to selection of appropriate technology for purchase.

Application System Development, Maintenance, and Operation
IR&C provides project management and technical services for the development of both large-scale, enterprise applications, including Web-based application systems, and smaller departmental applications. It also maintains and operates new and existing systems.

  • Development
Large-scale application system development projects generally are discussed, planned, and funded at high levels within the university organization. They involve several UCOP departments, campus functional offices, as well as an IR&C technical support team, and are usually deployed at all campuses. IR&C project managers work with the departments and technical staff to articulate the needs, goals, and scope of a project. IR&C technical personnel often assist with the development of requirements definitions, and may design, program, and test the system. Examples of Web-based, enterprise applications developed by IR&C in coordination with other UCOP departments, include the At Your Service Online employee self-service application and the Pathways undergraduate admissions system.

IR&C also offers technical support and development services for small-scale Web-site projects sponsored by UCOP departments. Hosting of static departmental Web sites is currently offered without recharge and includes Web server disk space, standard search functionality, and log analysis reporting. In addition, IR&C designs and programs new sites and applications, and provides ongoing maintenance on a recharge basis. Examples of Web sites include Continuing Medical Education, the California Health Benefits Review Program, the California Policy Research Center, the Early Academic Outreach Program, and the California State Summer School for Math and Science. For more information, see the Web Site Support and Development page.

  • Maintenance and Operation
IR&C maintains and operates numerous universitywide application systems, including the university's Payroll/Personnel System, Retirement System, Pathways, and At Your Service Online. Six campuses (UCD, UCI, UCR, UCSB, UCSC, UCSD) and two university-affiliated organizations (ASUCLA and Hastings College of the Law) contract with IR&C for ongoing payroll system maintenance and operations. Application systems are run in the UCOP Data Center, a unit within IR&C, per scheduled production cycles.
