Virus Detection

IR&C uses software to scan incoming e-mail on the ucop.edu server for viruses. When possible, e-mail will be "cleaned" of viruses before delivery to UCOP recipients. In instances when it is not possible to clean a virus-infected attachment, the attachment will be deleted from the e-mail message before delivery. In either case, the e-mail message will indicate the action taken by the virus scanner. All e-mail will be delivered, unless the cleaned messages themselves cause a problem, such as when the volume is very high. In this extreme case, IR&C will notify the UCOP community that a particular type of message will be dropped.

Examples of headers that will appear on e-mail messages scanned by the virus detection software are:

Because not all viruses arrive in e-mail messages, it is essential that virus-checking software be installed in all desktop and laptop computers and that virus definition files be kept as up-to-date as possible. Please contact Technology Service Desk if you are uncertain whether your computer has virus-checking software.
