Item 2 2000 Comments:
NSF code 016 Other Engineering decreased significantly due to completion of the Structural Systems Research Project funded by the California Department of Transportation. Funding terminated 6/99.
NSF code 017 Materials Engineering reflects a decrease in federal funding due to winding down of research on the International Thermonuclear Reactor. Funding terminated 10/99.
NSF code 022 reflects decreases in federal funding due to completion of several awards including but not limited to the following:
PHS funded - Research on Protein Crystallography - project terminated 5/99 PHS funded - Acquisition of a Maldi Spectrometer - project terminated 3/00 Pixel Array Detector for Protein Crystallography - project terminated 7/99 Mycothiol Biosynthesis and Metabolism as TB drug targets - project terminated 6/99
For the following projects, award period spans several years and fluctuation in spending patterns between years is expected:
Models of Geothermal Brine Chemistry project NSF funded - Optical Probes for Nanoenvironments and Nanomotors NASA funded - Determination of Oxygen Blank and Suitability of CVD Diamond for Concentration NSF funded - Mechanisms of Formation of Atmospheric Nitrous Oxide
NSF code 031 Atomospheric Science reflects a significant increase due mainly to the Triana Earth Radiometry and Imaging (TERI) project. Scientific goals and objectives include data acquisition and analysis directed to the study of the Earth's radiation budget from L-1, clouds and aerosol climate feedback issues and global ecology and vegetation as well as the scientific and technical training of students.
NSF code 054 Other Life Sciences reflects a significant increase in expenditures to due research at the WHITE MOUNTAIN RESEARCH STATION. Increased funding came from general (institutional) funding as well as a new award from the California Department of Fish & Game. There is a website which summarizes the nature of the research http//www.wmrs.edu/. |
