Security is the key impetus for the MDI. Over the last two years, the number and severity of Windows-based security attacks on the UCOP network have increased dramatically. UCOP must protect its network by utilizing the latest tools and implementing practices and policies proven to enhance security. Such an approach necessitates centralized management of the computing environment, including enforcement of computing policies and minimum standards. As a first step, the MDI calls for standardizing UCOP desktop hardware and software and migrating computers to a single Active Directory so that IR&C will be able to remotely manage various aspects of the desktop computing environment. This phase lays the groundwork for additional MDI phases. Implementation of a standard desktop does not prohibit departments from utilizing special software and tools necessary to carry out their business functions.
Centralized management has a number of advantages for departments. For example, IR&C will be able to update virus software or install security patches on all desktops, as soon as a problem is detected and tools are available. The MDI also has appeal for the individual user. UCOP employees will log-in only once to access their desktop, e-mail, and calendaring systems.
The MDI will be accomplished in three major phases. Click on the phase number to read more about that portion of the initiative.
Phase 1: Rollout of a standard desktop image and Microsoft's Active Directory service
Phase 2: Implementation of the Microsoft Exchange e-mail and calendaring system
Phase 3: Migration of user data from desktops to a secure central storage
