Employee Systems Task Force Report
The Employee
Systems Task Force Report is awaiting a funding commitment to move
forward. However, preliminary steps are bing taken. Progress has been made on implementing the first phase of the
University Directory (renamed from the Demographic Database in the ESTF Report); and on the improved Payroll/Personnel
System interface.
Business Officers Institute (formerly the Business Officers Training Certification)
JOG participation in BOI planning will be accomplished through a subcommittee
chaired by Dave Tomchek.
University Audit
The University's external auditors are focussing on several issues of concern
to JOG as discussed at the last JOG meeting.
University Policies
The draft Information Security Policy will be distributed at the JOG meeting
for comment. Following JOG comments, the draft will be distributed more widely for general campus comment.
The update to the already issued UC Policy on IT Systems Standards will be distributed
at JOG for comment prior to being issued.
The Email Policy has at last been issued in final form. UCOP has finalized
its guidelines and these will be distrubted to those campuses wishing to use them as a template.
Electronic Commerce
A telephone meeting of the Electronic Commerce Taskforce will be held on
May 7 to determine suitable topics for focussed workshops. The outcome will be reported at JOG.
Vance Vaughan of UCB is now working halftime at UCOP as Project Manager.
He has been working with vendors and OP CDL staff on certificate isuing and management technology, and with OP
systems development staff to interface the UC comprehensive "University Directory" (UDir) database to
the Authentication Project.
The Phase 2 Authentication
Working Group, chaired by Joan Gargano, has been making significant
progress on difficult issues regarding the content and management of Public Key Certificates.
A first version of the UDir, containing 175,000 University employees, was implemented April 30 and extracts were
made available to each campus. The UDir allows association of unique NetID's with each employee in preparation
for issuance of Public Key Certificates. During the next two months, a limited version of a certificate issuing
and certificate directory server will be launched and interfaces provided to several initial applications that
will make use of certificates, specifically the California Digital Library and the first round of Employee Self
Service Applications. Early implementations will provide for a limited test among dedicated focus groups.
Interested campuses are encouraged to make available similar certificate issuing servers so that interoperability
can be demonstrated and operational experience gained.
IT Classifications
With the exception of one classification, OP has finalized and implemented
its revised IT Classifications
model.
Instructional Technologies Assessment
As reported at the last meeting, a presentation, based on the assessment
model, was made to legislative staff in Sacramento, including representatives from the Legislative Analyst's Office,
on the project to assess UC instructional technology infrastructure expenditures. The legislative analyst chose
not to comment this year on the UC request for a further augmentation of $4 million to the budget for Instructional
Technology.
CENIC is moving forward with CalREN2. Implementation is scheduled for late
June, the delay being attributable to complexities of closing on contracts. The CENIC Annual Conference is scheduled
for May 19/20 at Dana Point. CalREN2 plans dovetail nicely with the recently announced Project Abilene of UCAID/Internet2.
