Employee Systems Task Force Report

The Employee Systems Task Force Report is complete and has been submitted to Senior Vice President Kennedy. Information presentations were made to the Council of Chancellors and to the Council of Administrative Vice Chancellors. Both presentations were well received with constructive suggestions regarding concerns that will need to be addressed.

Business Officers Training Forum

At the COVCA meeting last week, Assistant VP for HR Levin reported on the progress and directions for the Business Officers Training Certification Program. This is moving forward well. The BOTC program has involved a segment on Information Technologies, and various JOG members have participated. JOG may wish to consider how it can be of further assistance on this program.

IT Classifications

OP is finalizing its revised IT Classifications model. This would streamline the current classifications and adapt them to the realities of the marketplace.

University Audit

The university's external auditors reported to the Regents. Regarding "Business Systems Issues", the University Management Letter focussed on the four issues that were raised last year: Year 2000, Development and Implementation of New Systems, Information Security, and Business Continuity Planning. They noted where progress had been made and where there were still areas of concern.

University Policies

The UC Policy on IT Systems Standards has been issued as an interim policy following receipt of comments from JOG members and from Vice Chancellors of Administration. A policy on information security is in preparation.

The Email Policy will be issued in final form shortly. Campus comments have been received.

Electronic Commerce

At its January meeting, the Electronic Commerce Task Force re-affirmed its mission of promoting electronic commerce in support of improved productivity and quality of service at UC. The Task Force decided that another conference on the scale of last year's successful conference is not warranted at this time, but rather focus on targeted workshops on specific topics that would draw participants from across functional and campus boundaries. Progress reports from campuses highlighted specific technology infrastructure needs, including authentication, encryption and EDI.

Authentication Project

The Authentication Project team has submitted its report recommending that the University move forward with an authentication project based on public key encryption with recommendations on specific steps to be taken. The Steering Committee has endorsed this report. There will be full report at JOG that lays out where we go from here.

Instructional Technologies Assessment

A presentation was made to legislative staff in Sacramento, including representatives from the Legislative Analyst's Office, on the project to assess UC instructional technology infrastructure expenditures. The purpose was informational and designed to address in part questions that had been raised in last year's budget language. The presentation was based on the assessment model that was carried out by campuses and OP in the fall. The presentation also provided a context for this year's budget request for an additional $4 million for instructional technology.

CENIC/CalREN-2

The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) has been incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation. The Board of Directors includes three UC Directors (Kumar Patel, UCLA; Jack McCredie, UCB; and Stuart Lynn, UCOP) and three UC Alternate Directors (Bob Sugar, UCSB; Carol Barone, UCD; and Fred Siff, UCSC). Plans for CalREN-2 have been solidified and approved, with a planned pre-production implementation date of March.

Partnership for Performance

The Steering Committee of the Partnership for Performance met in December. Reports were presented from the HR, EH&S, Finance and Facilities' groups. The status of IT measurements was reviewed at the COVCA. A report will be presented at JOG.
