IR&C is responsible for University policy in the areas of information technology, electronic information security, data and records management, electronic communications, and telecommunications. Policies under the department's purview are the Information Systems policy series and the Records Management Program policy series in the Business and Finance Bulletins, as well as the presidential Electronic Communications Policy. The associate vice president of IR&C serves as the UCOP agent under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), and UCOP guidelines for complying with the DMCA are housed on the IR&C Web site.
IR&C assists University personnel, often in close coordination with
the Office of General Counsel, in interpreting the above-referenced
policies for application in specific situations at the campuses or
at UCOP. IR&C takes a leadership role in shaping the University agenda
for development of new IT related policies and for updating existing
policies. IR&C also participates in Universitywide groups that are
concerned with IT policy issues. These include the UC
Information Technology Policy and Security Officers, the Electronic
Communications Coordinators, the DMCA Agents, and the Information Technology Leadership Council.
