Two authentication services are recognized as components of the UC authentication infrastructure, Kerberos and X.509 certificates.
Kerberos is a mature technology currently used on campuses. It is well suited for intracampus and limited intercampus applications.
Public Key Infrastructure using X509 certificates is a relatively new technology. Implementation strategies are highly variable between institutions. However support for certificates is integrated into Netscape and Internet Explorer and increasing suppo
The use of one authentication service does not preclude the use of the other. They are complimentary. Both will coexist for several more years and products are available to integrate the protocols into a seamless authentication infrastructure service.
