iLinc FAQs

  1. What is iLinc?

iLinc is an interactive web meeting service that integrates video, desktop, application sharing and other collaborative capabilities. iLinc leaders are able to add and manage up to 50 guests from their account.

  2. What is the URL to the UCOP iLinc Web site?

    ucop.ilinc.com

  3. Is iLinc free?

Use of iLinc is free for UCOP customers and accounts can only be created for UCOP customers.

  4. How do I obtain an iLinc account?

Send an email to Techdesk to request your iLinc account. Your account will be activated and confirmed within 3-5 business days.

  5. What are the system requirements for the leader and each guest?

You will need a system that meets the following requirements:
    Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, 2003 R2 or Vista:

    • Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher (Recommend ActiveX enabled)
    • Firefox 1.5 or higher (Recommend Java installed)
    • Display: 1024 X 768, 16-bit color

    Apple® Mac OS® X 10.3.9 or higher (Both Intel & PowerPC computers):

    • Firefox 1.5 or higher
    • Safari™ 2.0 or higher
    • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 or higher
    • Display: 1024 X 768, 16-bit color
  6. What equipment do I need?

In addition to meeting the system requirements, you will also need to purchase a webcam.
We recommend the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 (~$99.99) for Windows and the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro (~$129.99) for Mac.  We do not recommend other less expensive cameras due to the poor quality and performance with iLinc. Users have reported trouble with their desktop systems after downloading the accompanying webcam software. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you do not install the software.  Also new Dell and Apple model laptops have built in web cameras which can be used as well but will depend upon your model and configuration. If you have questions, contact TechDesk and they can help inform you if a built in web camera is already installed on your laptop.

  7. Is iLinc secure?

iLinc requires a login and authentication through a branded UCOP website and is secure; it uses the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption to secure communication end to end over the internet.

  8. Is iLinc good for systemwide meetings?

iLinc provides session leaders with the ability to invite multiple guests to join their iLinc sessions using webcams and is an excellent tool for collaborative solutions and annotations. For larger meetings or high quality video and audio capability, use our UCOP videoconference services. Not sure what conference tool works best for you? Visit our UCOP conference tools (doc) for an overview of UCOP conference tools.

  9. How do I use iLinc once confirmation has been received that my account is created?

Your confirmation email will include information regarding your iLinc account and will include a link to logon to iLinc. Remember to keep your username and password for future iLinc sessions, as it will be required to login to the iLinc website.

  10. Is there training available for iLinc?

As an iLinc session leader, taking the time to first learn how to manage your sessions will go a long way towards ensuring that each iLinc session is successful. Leaders cannot effectively use the product without setting aside time for training. The iLinc Leader and Participant Quick Reference Guides are good starting points for leaders and their guests. Select the Help tab from your iLinc page for a complete list of quick reference materials and training links.
