Dear HR Colleagues:
Since I have yet to work with many of you, I want to introduce myself and tell you what you can expect from me during this period of transition for Human Resources. I should also add that I feel very honored to have been invited to assume Judy Boyette's responsibilities for the next few months.
I was born and raised in York, England, and began my career in human resources working as a Labor Relations Officer for Ford Motor Company near London. From there, I moved to Bank of America (B of A) where I had a complete range of HR experience during a tenure of more than 20 years. My B of A career brought me to live in the Bay Area three times, the last time commencing in 1990. In 2000, I left B of A to become the executive director of human resources for Stanford University. Three years later I left to start an HR Consulting company, which is how I met Judy Boyette. In 2005, Judy hired me to provide continuity in the Senior Management Group Compensation area while she recruited the new Executive Director, Dennis Larsen. I stayed on as an employee at UCOP, working on executive recruitment and a variety of special projects, including the HRB restructuring effort.
For the restructuring project, I have participated almost from the beginning, coordinating the design of the Executive Compensation and Performance Management and the Strategic Planning and Workforce Development Units, helping draft the job descriptions for the Executive Directors, and serving as a member of the Implementation Team and the Berkeley Breakthrough Team.
On a personal note, I am married with two grown married children, a daughter who is a veterinarian and a son who is a filmmaker. I enjoy traveling and working in the yard, and I belong to a social poker group.
I think you will find me to be hard working, organized, a person of high standards and a firm believer in collaboration. Because most of the questions we deal with are broad, I rely on many people for the solutions. It will be through collaboration with the four newly appointed Executive Directors that I expect the restructuring effort, as well as the other initiatives, to move forward. The Executive Directors, as members of the HR leadership team, share in the overall responsibility for the success of our department. I am confident we will have much success.
Like many of you, I have a passion for consistently serving the customer well, whether the customer be The Regents, the Campuses and Medical Centers, the Laboratory, faculty, staff, and students, or UCOP senior management. I see our role as navigating through the sometimes conflicting opinions of our stakeholders; collecting, considering and consulting on all the facts; being creative with our choice of solutions; demonstrating objectivity at all times; fully communicating with our stakeholders the results of our work; and tenaciously ensuring that all actions we take are in the best interests of the University mission.
I look forward to working with you during the coming months. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
John Cammidge
