Dear HR&B Colleagues:

I wanted to touch base with you regarding the UCOP restructuring effort as it relates to our department, and also to make you aware of a series of departmental meetings we have planned for April. This is a busy time for us all and I want to keep you informed as restructuring in HRB and throughout OP continues.

First, thanks to those of you who were able to attend the March 14 Town Hall meetings with Executive Vice President Katie Lapp and Provost Rory Hume. If you missed the meetings, transcripts of part of those sessions are available on the UC 2025 website.

Among other things, Rory and Katie previewed the OP budget that was presented to Regents last week. This document included an initial budget cut of over 10% for HRB. The budget document contains a great deal of information about the restructuring effort, including a discussion of methodology and a timetable of the next steps in the process. I suggest you take the time to read the executive summary, which is available here (use the links on the left to navigate the site). The Board of Regents indicated that it will discuss the budget report at length, and final 2008-2009 budgets for all UCOP departments are expected in May. Decisions regarding HRB's final budget reductions will be made following Regents' approval.

If you haven't already, I would also encourage you to take a moment to explore this website, and to read the Report on the Roles of the Office of the President, which outlines the design principles currently being implemented. These resources will help to give you a better idea of what we're working towards and how we intend to accomplish our goals to organize functions within UCOP in order to work more efficiently and effectively.

To help keep everyone informed about the restructuring efforts in general, and HRB's redesign initiatives in particular, we have a number of meetings planned for next month. I hope you'll take the opportunity to attend all that you can, and be sure to bring your questions. On April 10, we will hold our HRB All Hands meeting. At this meeting, the HRB Operating Team will outline its progress, and share updates on the future of the department. We will also be prepared to answer your questions about the UCOP budget report and provide more information on the measures called for in the HRB-specific budget. Then, on April 16th at the Kaiser Center from 12-1 pm and from 1-2 pm, and April 18th at Franklin from 12-1 pm, we'll hold our first informal Q&A sessions. I will be on hand with members of the Operating Team to answer your questions as best as we can. We want to accommodate everyone, so we ask that you please RSVP through the reservation tool with the date, time and location of the session you're interested in attending. Attendance will be first-come-first-served, but we want to hear from all of you, so we will plan additional meetings if needed.

Lastly, I want to make sure everyone is aware of all the services available to support employees during this transitional period. As was recently announced, UCOP HR is offering a number of resources for managing change, which include workshops and training in topics related to career development and change management. More information on upcoming sessions can be found on the UCOP HR website.

In closing, I want to thank you for your continued partnership during these challenging times, and for your comments and questions. I encourage you to continue to let me know what's on your mind, and how I can help. I look forward to meeting with you over the next few weeks.

Judy
