Legislative and Policy Unit
The Division of Health Affairs’ (DHA) Legislative unit coordinates the research, review and analysis of state and federal legislation and articulates divisional positions on a wide range of legislation and regulatory policies related to UC’s programs in health sciences education, related professional training, and health research. The unit communicates with faculty, researchers and administrators and works closely with UC’s government relations offices in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. to ensure that UC’s positions on legislation and policy are informed by DHA’s perspective.
The Legislative unit prepares responses to legislative and agency inquiries, identifies expert UC witnesses for legislative hearings, provides analyses and develops strategies for supporting or opposing legislation.
The Legislative unit also assists the DHA Vice President on special policy and legislative projects.
Guiding Principles for DHA’s
assessment and advocacy of legislation and policy:
• Promote ethical, quality research and educational
programs that serve the needs of the citizens of California
and the nation.
• Train culturally competent health care professionals
committed to pursuing careers of service in medically
underserved communities.
• Preserve health researchers’ and educators’
academic freedom.
• Seek appropriate funding for Graduate Medical
Education and health research.
