University of California Sustainability Policies and Best Practices

Curriculum

Courses that address different aspects of environmental sustainability can be found in nearly every department on every UC campus. This website offers a glimpse at some of the best practices in innovative education for sustainability, from student-organized courses to freshman seminars to courses that use the campus as a living laboratory for improving sustainable practices to courses that are organized around the new UC Green Building and Clean Energy Policy.

Food for thought from Anthony Cortese, President of Second Nature:

“Sustainability education and practice emphasizes critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, collaboration and interpersonal communication, making it an ideal context for building these crucial skills across all academic areas. By integrating knowledge across all disciplines, and emphasizing a connection between the curriculum and the operations of the university and the broader community, this approach to education helps students develop real-world skills—something increasingly sought by employers, and necessary for good citizenship. This approach to education has a wide range of very positive outcomes. It promotes better learning overall, increased civic engagement and improvement in local communities, a greater connection to place, and the skills and values needed in the transition to a sustainable society.”
