UCOP Office Consolidation Information

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT COMMUNITY

A SPECIAL UPDATE REGARDING OFFICE CONSOLIDATION

November 3, 2005

Dear UC Colleagues,

I am writing to inform you that UCOP has selected 1100 Broadway in downtown Oakland as the new site for its office consolidation initiative. This effort will bring our five satellite offices in and around Oakland under one roof.

The contracts for all of our leased spaces in the Oakland area are set to expire within the next several years and I believe consolidating our offices will improve operational efficiencies and foster a greater sense of the UCOP community. A consolidation will allow us to cut costs related to managing and maintaining multiple satellite offices while helping to improve workforce and operational efficiency, and this effort makes long-term and strategic sense for the University. This continues a process of space consolidation and reducing overall costs in order to maximize our resources and strategically position UCOP for long-term stability.

Later this month, UC management will present a recommendation to the Board of Regents to enter into a lease in a new building being developed at 1100 Broadway, adjacent to our current offices at 1111 Franklin Street. The new 11-story building will provide approximately 190,000 square feet of space and is expected to include street-level retail space. In addition, plans are underway to secure an additional 150 parking spaces along with this project. The new building will be designed to provide convenient access for employees between the two buildings and with access to both Broadway and Franklin streets. Preparation for the new site is expected to begin immediately, with occupancy in 2008.

We look forward to a new office configuration in the years ahead that allows us to maximize our resources and work closer together, and we will keep you informed throughout the development and construction period. Facilities Administration is developing a web site that will go live in mid-November to keep employees informed of the latest developments on this consolidation effort. If you have any questions, please contact , Manager of UCOP Space Planning, at (510) 987-9304.

Sincerely yours,

Joseph P. Mullinix
