Electricity Procurement

The University of California's Energy Services Unit (ESU) manages two clean electricity procurement programs to reduce the UC system's carbon footprint. As a regulated Electric Service Provider, the Clean Power Program (CPP) manages a portfolio of renewable and carbon-free electricity sources that is delivered to participating campuses by the state’s investor-owned utilities. The CPP also supports grid reliability and progress towards achieving state-wide decarbonization goals. The CPP portfolio has achieved an annual third-party verified emissions intensity of zero pounds CO2 equivalent per megawatt hour since 2019. The ESU also procures renewable electricity for accounts not directly served by the CPP. Through these programs, combined with utility green tariff options and onsite generation, the UC significantly mitigates its scope 2 carbon footprint.
