Shelley Davis

Program Leader, California State GEAR UP

Shelley Davis has been the Director of the California State GEAR UP Program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) since September 2001. In 1999, the U.S. Department of Education awarded multi-year grants to states to initiate systemic reform efforts focused on middle schools. The California State GEAR UP grant provides direct service to middle schools, including training and development opportunities for educators, teachers, counselors and the families of middle school students. This model program has developed resources and activities for the entire middle school community in California.

Davis holds a Masters in International and Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco and a BA degree in Elementary Education from Columbia Union College in Maryland. Her political experience includes positions as staff, delegate and floor whip to Democratic National Conventions. In 1989, she was a host delegate to Taiwan, Republic of China.

Davis has held positions with the Democratic National Committee, two Presidential campaigns, the State Assembly Speakers’ Office, the University of California Davis campus and the Office of the President. She currently serves on the California P-16 Council, the Advisory Commission of the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships, Board of Directors of the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform, Executive Board of the California ACT Council, as Chair of the California Middle Grades Alliance and Executive Committee member of the California Capital Small Business Development Corporation.
