Summary Data
-
What
You Will See
When you access
your class's summary data, you will see a table showing how often
each diagnostic statement was chosen by the UC readers as appropriate
to the essays submitted by your students. The table lists all of the
feedback statements in order, gives you the first few words of each
to remind you of its contents, and tells you the category ("Response
to the Writing Task," "Development," "Organization," and so forth)
to which each belongs. The frequency data itself (showing how many
times each statement was used by the readers who evaluated your students'
essays and the percentage of essays to which each statement was applied)
appear in the two rightmost columns. The frequency data can help you
identify which elements of the writing process are problematic for
a significant portion of your class. For example, you might find that
the readers applied a statement about inadequate development to 60%
of your students' essays and a corroborative statement about choosing
reasons and examples that are more relevant to the points being made
to 55%. Data such as these might well be useful as you craft subsequent
lesson plans.

How
to Access the Summary Data
The first step is to click on the summary data link provided in this
teachers' site or to type the web address http://web1.essayeval.org:82/uc_summary/report_spec.html
into the appropriate box on your browser. A screen will appear requiring
you to fill in a User Name and a Password. ETS will send you a User
Name and Password very shortly after you apply to us for access codes.
After filling in your User Name and Password, a screen will appear
asking for your school code and class ID. The school code is the 7-digit
CDS code for your school. The class ID is a number that you and your
fellow teachers make up and agree upon. For example, if your school
has four classes participating in the DWS, use "01, " "02," "03,"
and "04" for the class ID's. Just be sure that you and your colleagues
are clear about whose class is "01," whose class is "02," etc. If
you want the summary data to apply to your class, you MUST have a
class ID number, and you must make sure that your students know this
number and type it into the appropriate box when they submit their
essays. The box in which your students must type the class ID number
is found on the "essay submit" screen-the screen on which your students
actually write (or "paste") their essays. If you do not take pains
to ensure that the students fill in the class ID, the summary data
you retrieve will pertain to your entire school and not specifically
to your class.
