CPRC Helps Implement the Nation's First Statewide Environmental Surveillance Program.

In October 2001, Governor Davis signed Senate Bill 702, which declared the legislature's intent to establish an environmental health system to provide systematic, ongoing collection, collation, and analysis of information related to disease and the environment. CPRC and UC Berkeley's Health Research for Action worked with the California Department of Health Services and the California EPA to establish a working group of technical experts to devise possible approaches to establishing such a system, including measurements needed to monitor Californian's health, a database to facilitate examination of the relationship between chronic diseases and the environment over time, and the estimated cost for each approach.
