Participated in Cluster on Plant, Food Genetics and Human Physiology
The COSMOS program was such an enriching experience. I met so many new people and learned new things. This was truly a wonderful experience. My cluster was on human physiology, plants, and food genetics. Each of the different labs required the usage of very expensive and delicate equipment. I felt very privileged to be able to use the machinery to compile my data. I learned about the body and how it works. I was also taught about the muscles and why you need them to function. I studied how plants reproduce. Another thing that was taught to me was about food, and how you need certain foods to live. Carbohydrates and sugars are a necessity for living. I also learned about Basal Metabolic Rates, and Maximum Basal Metabolic Rates. I was educated on how to measure the rate of oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, cardiac output, total peripheral resistance, and frequency. Another thing that I found out how to do was cross two plants, for example, tobacco and cucumber which came out to be called, "cubaco." One of my professors told us that we should all drink a bottle of Gatorade if running more than a mile before and after the run. He said that while running you lose proper nutrients that your body needs, so to gain it back you drink Gatorade since it holds the required nutrients.
The friendships that I made in the four weeks of the program are unforgettable. I met so many unique people, which have impacted my life and changed it for the better. We became like brothers and sisters; we looked out for each other when one needed help, made sure that everyone understood the material that was required of us, and most importantly being there when needed the most, whether it was for projects or if anything bothered us. This bond that we all shared is one like no other. I am proud to say that I have made friends that I know will be there by my side. They may not be with me physically but knowing I can have someone to talk to in times of need is important.
I am so grateful to be chosen to participate in such a life-changing experience.
Sincerely,
Christina
