Proposed Policy on Ownership of Course Materials

The proposed policy was prepared by the University's Standing Committee on Copyright in response to increasing concerns within UC and in the higher education community about the ownership of course materials, particularly those in digital form. The goal in preparing this policy was to clarify existing policy conceps and extend their application to current issues and, in particular, to provide useful guidance for faculty, staff and administrators about intellectual property rights for teaching materials made tangible in digital form. The proposed policy builds upon and supplements the University's existing Policy on Copyright Ownership of 1992 (http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/coordrev/policy/8-19-92.html).

An earlier version of this proposed policy was distributed to campuses and the Academic Senate for informal review in May, 2001. The Standing Committee carefully considered the comments received in preparing a revision, and prepared a report summarizing its deliberations and responses to the comments.
