Grai L. Andreason The UCRS Advisory Board develops ideas, assesses issues of interest to UCRS participants and provides reviews to President Yudof. My eleven years at UCSD include my first full-time job (Staff Research Assistant) and the past six years in Technology Transfer. Between these positions, I went through graduate school and held various positions at scientific institutes and start-up companies. As I anticipate my own retirement, I have a vested interest in ensuring a viable plan for the near and far term. Although UC cannot sign up for risky options that promise big returns, we can leverage the intellectual resources of our employees to explore diverse options that keep our benefits secure. I look forward to hearing your ideas.
Catherine A. Brennan I am a staff scientist in the UCLA AIDS Institute. I have a PhD in Molecular Biology, and have worked in biomedical research for 15 years. UC has a long tradition of fair pension benefits, but given the current financial situation, many changes have been proposed. I come from a family of financial and accounting experts, and with my long-standing interest in financial affairs, am qualified to represent the staff of UC on the Pension Advisory Board. Important decisions with lasting consequences for UC staff will be made in coming months and years. I ask for your vote, so that I can represent the interests of the Staff, and ensure that communications about pension matters are timely and clear.
Paul D. Brooks I am running for election to the UC Retirement Plan Advisory Board to preserve our pensions and achieve more transparency in the management of the plan. I was a bargainer over the pension plan for UPTE from 2006 to 2007 and discovered many areas where we need more information. For example why does UCRS pay external management fees approximately equal to 2% of payroll? Why were the actuarial projections so inaccurate in 2003 that they claimed the fund would never need contributions, yet by 2006 actuarial projections reported the fund needed contributions? On the board I will work to achieve this needed transparency, to preserve our pension plan, and to make it sustainable for all employees, past, present, and future.
Michael Erazo Decisions have been made without proper concern for you, the everyday worker, because members of this board have come from management and leadership positions. It’s time to have a worker, not management, represent you. It’s time for new ideas and approaches that benefit you, not simply ask you to give up more. If you want what you say to matter, if you want your ideas to count, and if you want to have more control over your financial future, allow me to speak for you. I know the worker’s perspective because I am a worker.
Raschel Greenberg I welcome the opportunity to represent staff on the UCRS Advisory Board. I offer common sense, persistence, and 30 years of service, investment, and commitment to the University along with a long history of working with teams of staff and faculty. My leadership experience includes holding multiple positions on UCI’s Staff Assembly Executive Committee and serving as Campus Delegate to the Council of UC Staff Assemblies. Now, more than ever, retirement system benefits are important in our UC careers; my goal will be speaking up for staff in UCRS Advisory Board discussions. I’d appreciate your vote. Thank you.
Monica Martinez When I came to UCLA ten years ago, I took up a mission as a tireless patient advocate. That mission has expanded to include advocating on behalf of my UC coworkers as an AFSCME member and leader. From negotiating contractual wages and benefits to resolving workplace issues, I have always acted on the belief that our patients and students fare better when we work together. It is my desire to extend this ethic towards service on the UCRP Advisory Board. As a longtime advocate for strong post-employment benefits, I am ready to hit the ground running with a solid understanding of the issues and recent changes, and to contribute a much-needed perspective on how benefits changes impact UC workers.
Deborah H. McWilliams I began my UC career on the Irvine campus in 1989, and took a brief administrative hiatus from 1997 to 2006 to work as a full-time high school English teacher. I returned to UCI in 2006 to continue my administrative career, initially at UCI and, most recently, at UCLA. At UCI, I served on several UCI campuswide committees including Staff Assembly (as Chair, Immediate Past Chair, and Finance Chair); the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost’s Budget Work Group; the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Staff; and, the Chancellor’s Advisory Council on Campus Climate, Culture & Inclusion. As a recent transfer to UCLA, I hope to continue my staff advocacy efforts and University service.
