President’s and Chancellors' Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs
2010 Academic Retreat
October 29 – October 31, 2010
UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center
REGISTER NOW! for the 2010 Academic Retreat for Postdoctoral Fellows and their Mentors. The Retreat was developed to provide opportunities for postdoctoral fellows to present research papers and to receive both substantive and stylistic feedback on their presentations. The retreat is also an opportunity to network with UC faculty members and other postdoctoral fellows and relax in the beautiful environment of the Lake Arrowhead Conference Center.
Each fellow will have an opportunity to present a 20-minute discussion of their research in group sessions organized by broad disciplines to facilitate in-depth discussion and questions. These presentations are an opportunity to prepare for job interviews and to practice presenting papers at professional meetings or other public events.
Faculty mentors and other University faculty are being invited to this retreat to serve as the audience for these presentations, and to provide constructive feedback and comments for fellows on their research and career goals. Fellows will also have the opportunity to attend each other’s presentations and offer suggestions and responses to the research.
Other programs will include workshops on grant writing, publishing, the academic job search, and the tenure process.
Last year's retreat was another incredible success! We invite you to read some of the comments from faculty and fellows who attended previous retreats.
Here's how some postdocs described the most valuable aspects of the retreat:
"Thank you so much for organizing this event. I’ve learned more this weekend about the profession that I had in a long time."
"The talks and specifically, the written feedback that I received from the audience. This was the first time that I received written feedback, and it was incredibly helpful!"
"Conversations with other postdocs who had just been on job market."
"The seminar, sharing our work with each other. The feedback, questions and written comments are so very helpful. Sunday’s workshops were open, honest, heartfelt, very inspiring."
"Participating in the talks. It was great to get feedback from people who are not directly involved in our respective fields. It gave me the opportunity to think about my project in a broader sense."
"Breakout discussion was really useful too because it was specific and mostly directed by our questions."
"Sunday workshops were extremely helpful and informative…I felt as though I was being mentored by a whole group of people in unison."
Some comments from faculty mentors and former fellows:
"As always, building and strengthening this vibrant and necessary community."
"Presentations and critical evaluation – The fellows benefited from feedback from both faculty and peers, especially in terms of understanding types of audiences and tailoring talks."
"I found that the presentations by the postdocs were very productive – the papers showed serious engagement and the responses were quite useful. I also enjoyed the workshops on Sunday – great discussion. Really I liked all of it – including the “free” time to bond with folks."
"Presentations and workshops were amazing."
"Networking, socializing with colleagues. I enjoy being a supporter but the conference was good for me individually too."
