Letter from Provost King

I am pleased to announce two interim appointments I have made in order to ensure the continued smooth functioning of the Department of Academic Initiatives, following the departure of its Vice Provost, Carol Tomlinson-Keasey, to assume the Chancellorship of UC Merced.

Effective August 9, Julius Zelmanowitz, who has been serving as Faculty Assistant to Carol, became Interim Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives. Professor Zelmanowitz is from the Santa Barbara campus where he is Professor of mathematics and where he also served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel for 10 years. He has broad experience as a visiting professor at other UC campuses, other universities in the U.S., and abroad and has published widely in his field. In his role as Faculty Assistant in the Department of Academic Initiatives, he has been responsible for a wide range of activities including interactions with the UC campuses and the Academic Senate, and with other segments of higher education, particularly with respect to the development of joint doctoral programs with California State University campuses.

In addition, Richard Lucier, University Librarian and Executive Director of the California Digital Library, will add to his title that of Interim Associate Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives. Dick came to the Office of the President in July of 1997 from the UCSF campus where he was University Librarian and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Information Management, and Director of UCSF’s Center for Knowledge Management. His pioneering work in the development of the California Digital Library and his leadership of universitywide library planning reflect his technical knowledge, academic experience, and broad vision.

Juli and Dick will work together to manage the Department of Academic Initiatives while we carry out a search for a new Vice Provost. I anticipate getting the search underway early in the fall and appreciate Juli and Dick’s willingness to assume these additional responsibilities in the interim.
