The University of California provides faculty members with a valuable package of benefits -- among the best offered by any institution of higher education, nationwide. The benefits provided by UC are worth approximately one-third of each faculty member's monthly salary.
The University of California offers several different kinds of medical plan insurance coverage to eligible employees and family members: a fee-for-service plan, a point-of-service plan, and several health maintenance organizations. The University contributes to the monthly premium and employees contribute also under some plans. Information on medical coverage options and costs may be obtained from the campus Benefits Office. Medical benefits for annuitants (who have retired under the University of California Retirement Plan) and their dependents are correlated with the years of retirement system service credit, for those employees hired after January 1, 1990.
Dental care and optical coverage
Faculty can choose from two dental plans for personal and family coverage; UC pays the monthly premiums. University-paid optical coverage is also provided. Brochures available from your Benefits representative describe coverage and copayments.
UC provides life insurance equal to the annual base salary of each faculty member, up to $50,000 (adjusted for part-time appointees). Nonindustrial temporary disability insurance is also provided free of charge, as well as $100,000 in Business Travel Accident Insurance for faculty traveling on official University business. Other income protection plans are available, such as employee-paid life insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, dependent life insurance, and a supplemental employee-paid disability plan. Disability insurance, available at the time of hire, will provide income during extended incapacity to work. Employee-paid disability insurance enrollment after the initial hire period may require a statement of health. Faculty members are also eligible for benefits under California State Workers' Compensation.
Other benefit programs
The University's Tax Savings on Insurance Premiums (TIP) program allows employee-paid premiums for medical/dental/optical plans and AD&D insurance to be paid on a pre-tax basis. The DepCare (Dependent Care) program allows pre-tax payment of dependent care expenses. An employee-paid legal expense insurance plan is also available. As a convenience, automobile and homeowner/renter insurance are available through payroll deduction.
Most of UC's health care and insurance plans have a 31-day period of initial eligibility (PIE) which starts at the time of appointment or follows such events as a birth, adoption, or marriage. After the PIE ends, some plans will not accept enrollments until the next open enrollment period (usually held each November), and others will be unavailable or will require a statement of health acceptable to the insurance company. For these reasons, insurance and other programs should be selected with care. Department Personnel assistants or Benefits representatives can provide detailed information about all UC benefit plans, including information about enrollment and eligibility restrictions.
Note: Employer contributions to health and welfare benefits are subject to legislative appropriation. Contributions and benefits may change at any time.
Faculty emergency loans
The Chancellor's Office on each campus can provide information about the Faculty Loan Fund established to assist faculty members faced with financial emergencies such as personal or family illness.
