Provost's Office
Provost Lawrence H. Pitts works with the University of California's faculty, students and administrators throughout the system to ensure UC's academic excellence and its standing as the world's foremost public research university.
As the university's chief academic officer, Provost Pitts helps spearhead UC's drive to hire and retain faculty, students and staff of the highest quality, and he pushes for innovation in the realms of teaching and research on the campuses and at UC's five medical centers.
In his systemwide role, Pitts works closely with the Academic Senate on shared governance matters, and he acts to champion the collective academic interests of UC's 10 campuses, helping each flourish in its own way.
Describing his role in these challenging times of fiscal crisis, Pitts has observed: "I feel like I'm in a campaign. That's how I think of this. We are the finest public education system in the world, and we got there partly by doing things collaboratively."
