Audrey Gutierrez, Microbiology PhD Candidate, UCD
As an undergraduate, I had the opportunity to visit UC Davis and I fell in love with the campus. Upon learning of the great research being done at the university, I knew that UCD was my top choice for graduate school. I entered the graduate program as an Initiative for Minority Student Development Fellow, which allowed me to get a head start in lab rotations and life here in Davis. I am in the Microbiology Graduate Group which allows students to choose labs located in the medical school, veterinary school and basic science labs on the main campus. The professors and scientists at Davis really treat graduate student like junior colleagues, willing to discuss science or just life in general. UCD provides the setting and support to allow students with all types of backgrounds to excel in their chosen discipline. Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) is an excellent example of the support offered at UCD. AGEP has provided exceptional professional development guidance and mentoring. During the year we covered various topics such as thesis writing, interviewing skills, obtaining a post-doc position and getting the first professorship. AGEP has been invaluable for my professional development. I can now, with confidence, take the next steps in my career.
The program and training have gone far above my expectations.
