University of California PressBackground The University of California Press is the non-profit publishing arm of the University. Founded in 1893, the Press was originally fully subsidized by the State of California as the publisher of scholarly and scientific works by University faculty. The Press is now partially subsidized by the University. Today, the Press attracts manuscripts from all over the world and publishes 180 new cloth-bound books and about 90 paperback books annually as well as 30 scholarly journals. Its distinguished authors and staff and its excellent publications list have made it one of the leading university publishers in the world. About a third of the books the Press publishes are written by faculty members of the University of California. Organization The Press has its headquarters in Berkeley, an editorial branch office in Los Angeles, and a sales office in New York. In addition, the Press belongs to marketing groups in Great Britain, Asia, Australia, and Latin America. Senior officers of the University of California constitute the University Press Board of Control, which holds ultimate responsibility for the operations of the Press. The Editorial Committee of the Press is an Academic Senate standing committee of distinguished faculty members representing the University's nine campuses and is appointed by the Academic Senate's Statewide Committee on Committees. The Board approves every manuscript for publication and authorizes the Press to use the imprint of the University. Publications Over 3,000 scholars have written books published by the University of California Press. Although the Press publishes in all academic disciplines, areas of primary focus include Asian studies, literary editions and criticism, anthropology, sociology, political science, natural science, history of science, art, music, film, classics, women's studies, history, African studies, Latin American studies, philosophy, religion, and California studies.
