FACULTY FELLOWS PROGRAM, 2004-06

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The University of California has approved and funded a new Faculty Fellows Program for 2004-2006.

Nominations are now being accepted for the Faculty Fellows program. The Faculty Fellows program is a UC Office of the President initiative: (1) to provide new University of California Ph.D.s with mentored training and experience in the design and conduct of instructional courses and research; and (2) to provide high quality teaching of undergraduate courses to help accommodate projected large undergraduate enrollment growth. Please forward the following information to your department chairs.

Appointment titles: Faculty Fellows will be appointed to a 100% time academic year combined position of Lecturer (Unit 18) and Faculty Fellow Researcher. The percentage of the Lecturer appointment will conform to the instructional workload credits approved in each department, and the Faculty Fellow appointment will complete the full­ time position. The typical appointment for an academic year will be 50% Lecturer and 50% Faculty Fellow Researcher. In addition, during the summer Faculty Fellows may be paid additional compensation as a Faculty Fellow Researcher. Faculty Fellow appointments will begin, for pay purposes, on

July 1, 2004. Actual teaching assignments will begin Fall Quarter 2004.

Eligibility: All candidates must show promise for excellence in teaching and research.

At the time of nomination, candidates must have received a Ph.D. or terminal degree (M.F.A., M.L.A., etc.) from a UC campus in their field within six months prior to their appointment begin date (between December 1, 2003 and July 1, 2004); or they may be advanced to candidacy and projected to complete all requirements for the degree by July 1, 2004. All offers will be contingent upon the successful completion of the degree of July 1, 2004. There will be no exceptions to this deadline.

Selection criteria:
- Nominee's qualification and promise for excellence in teaching and r esearch.
- Proposed teaching and research programs.
- Plan for mentoring of the nominee.
- The extent to which the department in which the Fellow will be teaching has a heavy undergraduate workload.

Salary: The salary range for the Faculty Fellow Researcher and Lecturer is $34,404 to $52,476 (subject to range adjustments) to be paid over 12 months for the nine-month academic service period. Faculty Fellows are not eligible for merits. The term of appointment is two year, non-renewable.

Application: Individuals interested in being considered for Faculty Fellow appointments should apply through an instructional department. Applicants must identify a teaching and a research mentor (who may be one and the same person) and submit the following dossier to the department to be considered for fellowships with an appointment beginning on or after Fall Quarter 2004:

1) Letter to the department chair, applying for consideration as a Faculty Fellow nominee and proposing the research and teaching mentor or mentors.

2) Brief statement of teaching and research experience and interest in pursuing an academic career.

3) Research proposal (1-2 pages).

4) Curriculum vitae, including publications and actual or projected Ph.D. completion date.

Deadline: Nominations are to be submitted to the appropriate dean's office by April 12, 2004 .
