Sample Design Course Descriptions

Graphic Design I (version A), Graphic Design I (version B), and Design I/II are posted here to provide examples of model course descriptions that center on explicit VPA Standards. From these detailed course descriptions, UC reviewers would be able to determine that students taking either Graphic Design I or Design I/II will be engaged throughout the year in activities and assignments that build their aesthetic perception, provide many opportunities for creative expression, include relevant historical and cultural context for their work as well as for works of art studied, generate opportunities for developing and increasing their critical skills and analytical abilities, and connect visual art forms with the other arts disciplines, other subject areas, and career-related connections. Students in these courses will be deeply engaged in learning about and experiencing visual design as well as in applications of design elements and principles in particular visual art media.

Graphic Design I (version A) embeds a traditional outline within the course description as is called for in the posted Template Instructions. Neither Graphic Design I (version B) nor Design I/II includes the "traditional outline listing all topics and sub-topics, indicating both breadth and depth of coverage" (from Instructions for completing the Course Description Template). However, both are organized in a manner that provides substantive alternatives to a detailed outline.

Graphic Design I (version A)

a traditional Course Outline and list of Key Assignments

Graphic Design I (version B)

a several-segment matrix, an alternative to the Course Outline and list of Key Assignments

Design I/II

a general design course
