Design Course Resources
Since the establishment of the "f" requirement in 1999 requiring one year of visual or performing arts for UC/CSU eligibility, almost 19,000 courses have been submitted to UC in the arts disciplines of dance, music, theatre and visual art. In particular, visual art courses that emphasize design have been submitted by the hundreds; many of these have been approved, but many have not. Course submissions in this broad group have included animation, architectural design, basic design, culinary design, fashion design, floral design, furniture/wood design, graphic design, interior design, video design/production, and others. What has made some of these course submissions successful and others not? What are UC's expectations for successful visual art courses that emphasize design?
Materials posted here have been created to support teachers and schools wishing to offer standards-based visual design courses that can be approved by UC to meet the "f" requirement. The concept underlying every included item is that a successful visual art submission which emphasizes design must be centered in aesthetic dimensions including the elements of art and principles of design, must embody the visual art content standards, must address applications of student learning that are art-discipline-specific, and must provide opportunities for students to have direct experiences with visual media.
Developed in cooperation with The California Arts Project (TCAP), the design package includes these items:
Goals for this work will be realized as increasing numbers of standards-based visual design courses are approved to meet the "f" requirement in visual/performing arts.
