Career Technical Education (CTE) Resources

The faculty and staff of the University of California recognize the value of demanding career technical education (CTE) when combined with rigorous academics to prepare high school students for a full range of postsecondary education and training options. The annual report from the California Department of Education (CDE) offers evidence of UC’s commitment to accepting an increasing number of CTE courses to meet the “a-g” subject requirements.

This section of the web site provides information and guidance for high school administrators, teachers and counselors interested in developing and submitting for “a-g” approval career technical education courses. These courses may be offered by the high school or through the district, a Regional Occupational Program or Center.

  • CDE Report: CTE UC-Approved Courses (doc) – This report is produced annually in partnership with the California Department of Education to document the number, type and school location of CTE courses that are offered throughout the state.
  • Course Descriptions by Career Path – This site displays UC-approved CTE course outlines by Career Pathways.
  • CTE Guidelines for "g" elective courses – These guidelines have been developed by UC and CSU faculty to describe the criteria for approval for a CTE elective course. [Note: Courses that include a CTE focus also may be considered for "a-f" course approval.]
  • FAQs – This site posts the most commonly asked questions concerning CTE courses and policies.
  • Presentations – The presentations displayed here can be used for training and information purposes.
  • Helpful Hints – Information at this site will assist in the development and submission of new courses.
